Munich Airport Reopens After Drone Sightings Cause Flight Disruptions

Flight operations at Franz Josef Strauss Airport resumed on Friday morning following a temporary shutdown triggered by drone activity near the airport on Thursday evening.

Local police confirmed that multiple witnesses reported seeing a drone in the vicinity of the airport, with some claiming it was flying directly above the airfield. Authorities have yet to determine whether a single drone or multiple devices were involved, and no individuals have been identified in connection with the incident.

According to Die Zeit, the disruption affected 32 flights. Seventeen departures from Munich were cancelled, while incoming flights were diverted to alternative destinations, including Stuttgart and Vienna. An estimated 3,000 passengers were impacted by the delays and diversions.

Runway operations were suspended late Thursday as police conducted a search of the area, both on the ground and in the air, but no drone or suspect was located.

Following consultations with law enforcement, airport officials confirmed that normal flight operations resumed early Friday.
