Global Condemnation Follows Israeli Raid on Gaza Aid Flotilla

Israel’s interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters has triggered widespread international condemnation, with governments, human rights organisations, and UN officials denouncing the raid as a violation of international law and an attack on humanitarian principles.

The flotilla, comprising over 50 civilian vessels and more than 500 activists from 45 countries, was carrying medical supplies and humanitarian aid to Gaza when it was intercepted by Israeli naval forces. Activists and journalists on board were reportedly detained, prompting fierce criticism from across the globe.

Hamas described the operation as “a crime of piracy and maritime terrorism against civilians,” urging “all defenders of freedom in the world” to condemn the act. The group said the raid, conducted in international waters, was “a treacherous act of aggression” that adds to Israel’s “dark record of crimes.” Palestinian Islamic Jihad echoed the condemnation, calling the interception “a blatant violation of international and humanitarian conventions” and holding Israel “fully responsible for the safety of participants” on board.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives joined the chorus of international criticism, condemning the raid as a “grave affront to humanity” and “a flagrant breach of international law.” He stated that such acts of intimidation are unacceptable and must not be tolerated. The President stressed that targeting a humanitarian convoy delivering relief to a population deprived of freedom and basic necessities represents a serious violation of human dignity and international norms. He further accused Israel of showing “neither mercy nor compassion,” and called on the international community to take decisive action against what he described as “gross and repeated violations of international law.” President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit of justice, peace, and human rights.

Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemned the seizure of flotilla activists as “unlawful,” and criticised Western governments for their complicity. European governments expressed concern over the incident. France called on Israel to guarantee the safety of participants and provide consular protection. Switzerland urged compliance with principles of necessity and proportionality. Belgium and Ireland also voiced concern, with Irish President Michael Higgins describing the raid as “alarming for the entire world” and linking it to “genocide policies” in Gaza. Italian MEP Brando Benifei labelled the interception “unlawful and a criminal act,” and criticised the international community for failing to protect the flotilla.

South American nations also reacted strongly. Colombian President Gustavo Petro expelled Israel’s diplomatic delegation following the detention of two Colombian citizens, calling the raid “a new international crime.” Brazil expressed concern for its 15 nationals on board, while Venezuela described the operation as “a cowardly act of piracy.” Bolivia’s President Luis Arce called the attack “a flagrant violation of international law,” and Uruguay voiced “serious concern.” Chile confirmed its support for citizens aboard the flotilla and held Israel responsible for their safety.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail in late August, was the largest humanitarian mission to Gaza in recent years. Its interception has reignited calls for international accountability and heightened scrutiny of Israel’s actions in the region.
