China scrape past Timor-Leste in U23 Asian Cup qualifying opener

China edged past Timor-Leste 2-1 in their opening AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifier on Wednesday night, a result that, while ultimately favorable, revealed some rough edges beneath the surface.

Baihelalu Abuduwaili came agonizingly close to giving China an early lead in the 19th minute, only for his close-range header to be denied by Timor-Leste goalkeeper Junildo Manuel Pereira. It wasn’t until the 42nd minute that Baihelamu finally broke the deadlock, deftly capitalizing on Wang Shiqin’s free kick at the goalmouth. Wang Yudong doubled the advantage just before halftime, offering a glimpse of promise.

Yet the match was far from comfortable. Timor-Leste’s Paulo Freitas pulled one back in the 52nd minute, injecting nerves into the Chinese side. Xiang Yuwang’s effort struck the crossbar shortly after, followed by a missed one-on-one chance, both opportunities that might have put the result beyond doubt. Despite these chances, neither side could alter the score before the final whistle.

Elsewhere in Group D, Australia made a statement by dismantling the Northern Mariana Islands 14-0, seizing top spot on goal difference. China currently sit second, with qualification prospects hinging on consistent improvement.

China’s next outing on Saturday pits them against the Northern Mariana Islands, while Australia faces Timor-Leste.
