Maldives and Sri Lanka sign agreement to boost youth and sports cooperation

The deal was announced during President Muizzu’s state visit to Colombo and builds on years of Sri Lankan support for Maldivian athletes.

The Maldives and Sri Lanka have signed a new agreement to deepen cooperation in youth and sports development, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu describing it as one of the most meaningful outcomes of his ongoing state visit to Colombo.

Muizzu said Sri Lanka has long been a reliable partner in this area, and that the new agreement would take that relationship further. “The cooperation extended through this agreement will further enhance efforts in youth and sports development,” he said.

Sri Lanka already plays a significant role in supporting Maldivian sport. Over the years, the Sri Lankan government has helped organise training programmes and camps for Maldivian athletes across a range of disciplines — including football, cricket, tennis, and athletics. When Maldivian teams travel to Sri Lanka for international competitions, arrangements are also made to ensure they receive the support and services they need.

The President said he expects this visit to open the door to even closer collaboration, giving Maldivian youth and athletes stronger backing as the country works toward its goals in sports development.
