Wang Ziying makes history by winning women’s wheelchair title at Wimbledon

Chinese No. 4 seed Wang Ziying defeated top-seeded Yui Kamiji of Japan 6-3, 6-3 in the women’s singles wheelchair final at the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England on Saturday.

Not only did Wang win her first Grand Slam title, she also became the first wheelchair player from the Chinese mainland to lift a singles trophy at Wimbledon.

The two had played nine matches previously and Kamiji won eight of them. She has 10 major titles to her name and was seeking to complete a career Grand Slam with her first at the All England Club.

It took Wang five set points to claim the first as the ninth game went to deuce nine times. She didn’t let the scenario repeat itself in the second set and converted the first match point to seal the deal.

Wang hit 55 winners in the match. She hugged her doubles partner Li Xiaohui after the victory. The two will continue to compete for the women’s doubles title against Angelica Bernal of Colombia and Ksenia Chasteau of France on Sunday.
