President Dr Muizzu Reiterates Commitment to Decentralised Development Model

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that decentralised service delivery is a central philosophy of his Administration, describing it as the most effective way to ensure that development reflects the priorities of local communities.

Addressing residents in Kendhoo during his ongoing tour of Baa Atoll, the President said that meaningful progress depends on leaders engaging directly with the public, understanding their concerns firsthand, and shaping projects accordingly. He explained that under a decentralised model, state and development initiatives are designed with active input from the communities they serve, rather than dictated from the centre.

The President called for sincerity and unity in municipal governance, urging local councils to put aside political divides and work with the Government in the best interests of their constituencies. He pointed to recent legal reforms that prevent council-owned companies from operating small and micro businesses, saying the measure is intended to protect local entrepreneurs and ensure equal opportunities for all.

During the Kendhoo visit, several major projects were announced, including a land reclamation project, harbour upgrades, and new coastal protection works. The President also officially inaugurated the island’s water and sewerage services, which he described as essential infrastructure that improves the quality of daily life.

He pledged to fulfil ten key commitments made to Kendhoo during his presidential campaign, along with additional projects in health, education, and recreation. These include completing a new health centre, enhancing school facilities, and creating more spaces for sports and leisure activities.

The Kendhoo stop marks the first day of President Muizzu’s four-day tour of Baa Atoll, during which he will visit all 13 inhabited islands accompanied by Ministers and senior Government officials. The tour is part of his stated effort to strengthen community engagement and deliver development in line with local needs.
