President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has delivered on yet another key promise, with PayPal now officially available in the Maldives. The President personally launched the long-awaited service at a ceremony at Bandos Nasandhura, marking a major milestone in his government’s drive to modernize the nation’s economy.
Bringing PayPal to the Maldives was one of President Muizzu’s campaign pledges, part of his broader commitment to introduce e-wallets and modern online payment systems. With today’s launch, that promise has become a reality, opening up valuable new opportunities for Maldivians.
Speaking at the event, PayPal’s Vice President and General Manager, Amir Viliani, praised the development as an important step in connecting people and businesses through trusted financial transactions. He said it aligns closely with the government’s “2.0” vision and will help carry the Maldives to new heights in economic diversification.
“Being able to make trusted financial transactions gives freelancers, business owners, and people looking for new opportunities a real chance to grow,” Viliani said.
The achievement is the result of focused effort by the government, which made bringing PayPal to the country a top priority. After the proposal was first submitted in August 2024, the necessary inward remittance license was granted to Tecfin Maldives, an Ooredoo company, in October 2025, with testing completed earlier this year, a clear sign of steady and determined progress under the President’s leadership.
Ooredoo Maldives CEO and Managing Director Shadi Gawasmeh welcomed the launch, noting that the company has spent around 20 years bringing world-class digital services to the Maldives. He said PayPal marks another important step toward building a strong digital economy and realizing the vision of a “Digital Maldives.”
“This is an important step on our journey toward a digital Maldives. It will give people more opportunities on the international stage,” Gawasmeh said.
The service runs through Ooredoo’s m-Faisaa, powered by a seamless integration with PayPal. Thanks to the government’s vision and persistence, the Maldives now stands proudly among the region’s most advanced digital economies, a testament to President Muizzu’s determination to build a brighter, more connected future for the nation.
