Maldives Celebrate South Asian Super Cup Victory

The Maldives have lifted the inaugural South Asian Super Cup with a 4–1 aggregate victory over Sri Lanka, a triumph that not only brought celebrations across the islands but also further solidified the nation’s position as one of the region’s top footballing powers.

A dominant 3–0 win in the first leg meant the Red Snappers carried a strong advantage into the return fixture, which ended in a 1–1 draw. The breakthrough came when Ali Fasir (Sentey) drove into the box and set up Ibrahim Mahdi Hussain (Feydhu Ibbe). His header struck the crossbar, but Naiz Hussain (Dhaadhu) was quick to react, calmly turning the rebound into the net. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations from Maldivian fans, confident the Cup was theirs.

Sri Lanka pressed for a response and grabbed a late equaliser through Oliver Kelat, but the aggregate score ensured the Maldives were never in danger of surrendering their lead. The team’s composure, resilience and unity carried them through to a victory that will be remembered as a proud moment in Maldivian football.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu congratulated the national team on their achievement, describing the win as a moment of pride for the entire country. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalising the game, with plans for new sporting facilities in Malé and the atolls to support future generations of footballers.
