The Indian Air Force on Friday showcased its operational strength and defensive preparedness at the large-scale exercise ‘Vayu Shakti-2026’, held at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan.
The event was formally inaugurated by Indian President Draupadi Murmu and attended by journalists and military representatives from friendly nations, including the Maldives. The participation of Maldivian representatives reflects the continued engagement between the two countries in the area of defence and security cooperation.
The exercise demonstrated how the Indian Air Force would respond to hostile threats, including intercepting enemy offensives and carrying out precision retaliatory strikes if required. Observers were briefed on a range of tactical air operations, including manoeuvres previously employed during ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military response to a terrorist attack.
A total of 130 aircraft took part in the exercise. The display featured frontline fighter jets such as the Su-30 MKI, Mirage 2000, MiG-29 and Jaguar, as well as Mi-17 helicopters. India also highlighted its growing defence self-reliance by showcasing indigenously developed platforms including the HAL Dhruv and Prachand helicopters.
Held on the evening of 27 February, the exercise included both day and night operations. The drills simulated offensive missions, coordinated strikes in support of ground and naval forces, and precision targeting exercises.
The aerial demonstration followed a recent Indian Navy exercise aimed at highlighting maritime capabilities and strengthening cooperation with partner countries, including the Maldives.
Maldivian representatives’ attendance at the exercise highlights the continued engagement between the Maldives and India in areas of mutual interest, particularly regional security and stability. Both countries maintain longstanding ties and cooperation across multiple sectors.
