Myanmar declares state of emergency after powerful quake; Bangkok designated a disaster area

A strong earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday (Mar 28), with tremors felt in Thailand and China.

There was no immediate word from Myanmar authorities on damage, but one of the biggest hospitals in capital Naypyidaw was described by officials as a “mass casualty area”.

In Bangkok, hundreds of people rushed onto the streets as buildings shook, and dozens of workers were trapped when an under-construction skyscraper collapsed.

The epicentre of the quake was about 17.2km from Myanmar’s Mandalay, at a relatively shallow depth of 10km. Follow live updates:
