First Lady says football is a tool that unites the world

The First Lady, Her Excellency Madam Sajidha Mohamed, has stated that football is not merely a sport, but a means of bringing the world closer together.

In a post marking World Football Day, Madam Sajidha noted that football holds a special place in the heart of every Maldivian living on every island of the small island nation.

She described football as more than a game, calling it an activity that connects people of different ages, cultures, and backgrounds from across the globe. Her Excellency further characterised the sport as one that contributes to a healthy, joyful, and meaningful life.

Through football, she said, individuals learn the importance of good character, teamwork, discipline, and adherence to rules and principles. The sport, she added, builds not only athletes but also responsible citizens.

Madam Sajidha expressed hope that World Football Day would serve as a reminder of the role sport, and football in particular, plays in building safe and united communities. She emphasised that the game has the power to inspire young people and help shape a prosperous future.

World Football Day is observed annually on 25 May. The commemorative day was first marked in 2024, coinciding with the centenary of the first international football tournament ever held in history.
