Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has departed to attend the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, regarding concerns over Palestinian displacement from Gaza.
The emergency session follows recent statements by the United States President Donald J. Trump calling for the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, despite the recent ceasefire agreement that halted the Israeli military operations ongoing since October 7, 2023.
Both Egypt and Jordan have rejected Trump’s proposal, as have other Arab and Islamic nations, including the Maldives.
The OIC meeting will determine the organisation’s collective response to this situation while also addressing the genocide in Gaza. Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to restrict humanitarian aid deliveries to the territory, prompting condemnation from the Maldives and calls for unrestricted aid access.
The Maldives has also endorsed Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan, highlighting that it would enable Gaza residents to remain in their homeland with international support.
Under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership, the Maldives continues to advocate for Palestinian rights in international forums and supports the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
