For the first time in history, a Maldivian president has been recognised on TIME’s global health list.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been included in the 2026 TIME100 Health, a globally respected annual list curated by TIME magazine’s editors to spotlight 100 individuals whose work is transforming health outcomes and influencing policy worldwide.
The TIME100 Health list is compiled through editorial research, expert consultation and global reporting. It recognises leaders whose decisions have a measurable impact; from heads of state and ministers to scientists, innovators and public health advocates. Being featured signals international recognition of influence, effectiveness and forward-thinking leadership in one of the most critical sectors affecting societies today.
President Muizzu’s inclusion centres on his introduction of the generational tobacco ban, which is a bold policy prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to individuals born on or after 1 January 2007. The measure has drawn global attention for its long-term vision: protecting future generations and reshaping national health trends over time.
In the interview given to TIME magazine, President Muizzu spoke candidly about why the shift was necessary.
“Mostly in the government, the policy has been to take curative action towards health issues instead of focusing more on the preventive side,” he said. “We are focusing equally on both sides.”
TIME notes that alongside the tobacco ban, the administration established free tobacco cessation clinics on each island and launched a free 24/7 mental-health helpline in 2026. The article also highlights another milestone: the Maldives became the first country to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.
“All these things are done together to bring a meaningful, measurable, sustainable change to our lifestyle, the health of the whole country,” President Muizzu said.
For the Maldives, this recognition is not just symbolic. It reflects international acknowledgement of a comprehensive health strategy; one that pairs bold legislation with accessible support systems and measurable outcomes.
Being featured in TIME100 Health signals that the country’s public health reforms are being watched, studied and recognised at the highest global levels. A proud and historic moment for the country.
