The Maldives has done it again – and faster than ever before. Today, the tropical archipelago welcomed its two millionth visitor of 2025, marking a historic moment for one of the world’s most sought-after destinations.
The lucky traveller? Bethany Sarah Kerswell, a 30-year-old from England, touched down at Velana International Airport this morning for her honeymoon. Her first visit to the Maldives will be spent at the luxurious Outrigger Maafushivaru resort – and it began with a warm island-style celebration.
The airport’s waterfront area was transformed into a festive scene as officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), and industry partners gathered to honour the milestone. Bethany was showered with commemorative gifts and even a holiday voucher, making her honeymoon start on an unforgettable note.
“This achievement is a reflection of the Maldives’ enduring charm and the hard work behind the scenes,” said a spokesperson for VMC. “Reaching two million arrivals in November puts us firmly on track to hit our 2.3 million target by year-end.”
The timing is significant: last year, the Maldives crossed the two million mark on Boxing Day. This year’s early success signals strong growth across key markets and the impact of bold global campaigns. From dazzling stands at ITB Berlin and WTM London to a headline-grabbing partnership with Liverpool FC, the Maldives has been everywhere – and travellers have responded.
China, Russia, the UK, Italy, and Germany remain top contributors, while joint promotions with airlines and tour operators have kept bookings flowing. Roadshows, media trips, and the vibrant Visit Maldives Week series have also helped keep the destination front of mind for holidaymakers worldwide.
As the festive season approaches, the Maldives is gearing up for a surge in arrivals. With its turquoise lagoons, powder-white beaches, and world-class hospitality, the islands continue to hold their crown as the ultimate escape.
