President and Commander-in-Chief of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), Dr Mohamed Muizzu, officially inaugurated the Maldives National Service today at a ceremonial event held at the Composite Training Centre (CTC) in Maafilaafushi. The occasion was marked by the formal presentation of the National Service Flag, symbolising the launch of this landmark initiative.
In his keynote address, President Muizzu underscored the pivotal role of youth in national development, asserting that the cultivation of a patriotic, principled, and capable younger generation is of greater significance than any physical infrastructure. He emphasised the importance of instilling Islamic values and a strong sense of national identity among participants.
“This training represents a vital opportunity,” the President told attendees. “By the time you complete this phase and progress to the next, you will be transformed into individuals who are empowered to serve the nation with honour and dedication.”
The President described the programme as a historic step for the Maldives, stating that nurturing loyal and devout youth is more valuable than constructing even a fifty-storey building. He encouraged participants to embrace the training as a pathway to personal growth and national service.

The Maldives National Service has been established to foster responsible citizens who are physically fit, mentally resilient, and spiritually grounded. The initial three-month training programme includes modules on national identity, civic responsibility, education, leadership, and language proficiency, alongside physical conditioning, discipline, and practical skills such as first aid, firefighting, and self-defence.
The ceremony was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, senior government officials, cabinet ministers, and high-ranking members of the MNDF.
President Muizzu also announced that participants will have the option to join the MNDF or the Maldives Police Service upon completion of the programme. He revealed plans to introduce dedicated legislation to govern the initiative, which will include provisions for participant allowances. For the time being, enrollees will receive a starting stipend of MVR 6,000.
The inaugural cohort of trainees commenced their programme today, pledging their commitment to the National Service alongside their instructors.
