President Reaffirms Maldives’ Commitment to Sustainable and People-Centred Tourism

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ pledge to build a sustainable, people-centred and innovative tourism sector, marking World Tourism Day with a message of progress and gratitude.

In his statement, President Muizzu described the Maldives’ rise to global leadership in hospitality as a testament to the vision and determination of the pioneers who built the industry. He said this year’s World Tourism Day theme – “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” – is closely aligned with the nation’s priorities, ensuring that tourism remains a force for positive change.

The President noted that the sector is diversifying, with tourism now expanding into less-engaged atolls and branching into new segments such as halal tourism. He said these developments are underpinned by major infrastructure projects, including the new international terminal at Velana International Airport, which supports the Maldives’ broader development strategy.

He extended his heartfelt gratitude to everyone working tirelessly across the industry, saying their dedication and service continue to set the Maldivian experience apart.

“The future of Maldivian tourism rests on the hard work, unwavering commitment, and invaluable contributions of those who make this industry what it is.”

President Muizzu renewed his administration’s pledge to ensure that progress and sustainability go hand in hand, emphasising that these principles will continue to guide the Maldives’ tourism vision.

The President also extended World Tourism Day greetings on his official X account, underscoring his government’s dedication to shaping a tourism model that is inclusive, innovative, and resilient.
