President: 900th Anniversary of Maldives Embracing Islam ‘Most Significant Milestone of Our Generation’

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the upcoming 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam as the most significant and historic milestone this generation will witness.

In a national address delivered on the day commemorating the Maldives’ conversion to Islam, the President announced that the Government will launch a series of nationwide programmes next year to mark the anniversary. The events aim to revive the Islamic and national spirit and to strengthen unity across the country.

President Muizzu highlighted that historians have described Maldivians as hospitable, peace-loving, well-mannered, and generous for centuries. He said the country’s beauty is magnified when combined with the Islamic moral values that have shaped Maldivian society for nine centuries.

The President reiterated that one of the Government’s key priorities is to raise wise and principled citizens by ensuring proper education and upbringing for children, alongside continued infrastructure development. He also called for greater national unity, kind speech and a deeper love for religion.

Concluding his remarks, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the Maldives as a strong Islamic state and defending the wider Ummah.

The Maldives commemorates its conversion to Islam annually on the 2nd of Rabiʽ al-Akhir in the Islamic calendar.
