President Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated a new powerhouse developed by the State Electric Company Limited (Stelco) on K. Dhiffushi, marking a significant step forward in the island’s energy infrastructure.
The inauguration took place during the President’s ongoing visit to Kaafu Atoll and was attended by Stelco’s Managing Director, Ahmed Shamhaad Rasheed, along with senior company officials.
According to Stelco, the project included the construction of a powerhouse, a customer service building, and a jetty. Work began on 26 June 2024 and was completed on 30 April 2025 under a contract awarded to Sunwill Pvt Ltd, valued at MVR 12.5 million. This makes it the first project initiated and completed under the current administration.
The newly inaugurated powerhouse currently has a power generation capacity of 2.2 megawatts, with the ability to expand up to 7 megawatts. It features an engine room, control room, office space, and an accommodation block for staff, addressing long-standing housing challenges and reducing costs for employees.
The 30,000-square-foot facility also includes a kitchen, coffee corner, and prayer room, alongside two new fuel tanks to improve storage and supply efficiency. Stelco stated that the upgraded facility will ensure a more reliable and efficient power supply for Dhiffushi residents while supporting future development projects on the island.
This milestone underscores the administration’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development and delivering tangible improvements to communities across the Maldives.
