Maldivian SMEs Take Global Leap with Alibaba Partnership

Government-led webinar highlights cross-border e-commerce opportunities and supports Maldivian entrepreneurs to expand into international markets.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, in collaboration with the Business Centre Corporation (BCC) and Alibaba.com, hosted a landmark webinar titled “From Maldives to Global Markets – Unlocking E-Commerce with Alibaba”. The event aimed to empower Maldivian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to expand into international e-commerce.

Held at Barcelo Nasandhura, the webinar provided local businesses with valuable insights into the Alibaba ecosystem and practical tools to enhance their global market presence. This initiative supports Maldivian entrepreneurs in establishing seller accounts on international platforms—an important step aligned with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s economic pledges.

The sessions covered B2B cross-border e-commerce trends, platform functionalities, and included a live demonstration of seller operations on Alibaba.com. The programme is designed to equip SMEs with the knowledge and resources needed to drive export growth and boost international visibility.

“We’re launching digital bridges that will carry Maldivian creativity across every ocean, to every continent,” said Minister of Economic Development and Trade, H.E. Mohamed Saeed. “This groundbreaking initiative maximises opportunities for our local creators by harnessing the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement alongside Alibaba’s massive global reach.”

This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the Government’s creative economy strategy, enabling Maldivian businesses to engage in digital trade and compete on a global scale.
