President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed that the Government’s housing allocations will be guided by the needs of each community and the principles set by their island councils, describing it as a core policy of his Administration.
Speaking in Thulhaadhoo during his Baa Atoll tour, the President said that housing distribution must reflect the specific circumstances of local residents rather than follow a uniform, centrally dictated approach. He emphasised that the policy is rooted in respecting the decisions made by the people through their elected councils.
In Thulhaadhoo, the policy will be put into action with the planned development of 100 new housing units. The President also pledged to facilitate the privatisation of 119 reclaimed plots on the island, responding to a request from the community.
The visit brought other significant commitments, including the pledge to begin work immediately on the newly inaugurated Thulhaadhoo Airport project, which will proceed without interruption. The President also announced plans to strengthen the island’s health services, introducing specialist medical care with a focus on women and children.
By formalising a housing allocation policy that defers to local priorities, the Administration signals a shift toward a model that combines national resources with community-led decision-making. For residents across the country, it sets an expectation that housing projects will not only increase in number but will also reflect the realities of the people who will call them home.
