President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with Her Excellency Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
During the meeting, both leaders praised the strong and dynamic relations between the European Union and the Maldives, expressing a mutual desire to further enhance diplomatic ties.
President Dr Muizzu presented his administration’s development agenda, highlighting key areas requiring additional assistance to advance the country’s progress. He expressed concern over the 24% tariff imposed on Maldivian fish exports to the European Union, stressing that this taxation significantly hinders the Maldives’ competitiveness in the EU market. Additionally, he noted the Maldives’ efforts in climate adaptation and mitigation.
In response, the President of the European Commission reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for the Maldives. Praising the Maldives’ proactive stance on climate change, she positively acknowledged the country’s request for increased assistance in adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Both leaders concluded the meeting by reiterating their dedication to strengthening diplomatic relations and collaborating on matters of mutual interest.
