President Muizzu: PayPal Launch Clears the Way for Maldivians to Compete Worldwide

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged Maldivian creators and innovators to seize a newly opened path to establish themselves in international markets, following the arrival of PayPal services in the country.

The president made the call while speaking at the ceremony marking the launch of PayPal in the Maldives. He described the occasion as the fulfilment of a pledge he had made to the public, delivered in full.

Dr. Muizzu said the greatest obstacle facing the country’s creators and innovators had long been the absence of easy ways to share their skills with the international market and earn from them. For years, he said, the argument had been that such opportunities could not be made available because the Maldives is a small nation, but he had refused to accept that view. Bringing services such as PayPal to the country, he said, was undertaken with precisely that purpose in mind.

The president described PayPal as one component of a larger blueprint for developing strategic infrastructure. All such work, he said, is being carried out in line with the vision of making the Maldives a developed nation by 2040, a goal that cannot be reached without diversifying the national economy.

Among the targets within that vision, Dr. Muizzu said, is raising the digital economy’s contribution to national output to at least 15 percent by 2030. He noted that work on the Dhiraagu International Submarine Cable, undertaken with Google, had begun in keeping with that aim, and that the Maldives stands ready for the most advanced digital infrastructure.

The president called on the country’s creators to take advantage of the easier access to international markets that PayPal’s arrival provides. He drew a comparison with the past, noting that earlier generations had connected the Maldives to the wider world by sea, while today the country is being linked to the international community through the digital economy.

Alongside digital tools, Dr. Muizzu said, physical spaces are also being developed. Work on a Creator Hub is progressing rapidly and is set to open on 11 November this year, built with state of the art studios and co-working spaces. Regional facilities are being developed as well, he added, expressing hope that every citizen would benefit and share their own creations with the world.
