President calls for unified national effort to safeguard children in digital age

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the provision of age-appropriate education and upbringing for children as a shared national commitment, calling on parents, educators and the wider community to work together in shaping a healthy and responsible generation. He made the remarks in his address marking Children’s Day, observed annually in the Maldives on 10 May.

The President said that showing children genuine love means equipping them with both religious and worldly knowledge so they can grow into responsible individuals. He stressed that protecting children is a collective duty, and urged the public to remain vigilant against anything that could compromise a child’s innocence.

A call to rethink children’s exposure to technology

A significant portion of the President’s address focused on the risks posed by the internet and modern technology. He said that parents and teachers must adopt a fresh approach to shield children from online dangers, noting that the very tools introduced to support modern education and entertainment have, in some instances, caused serious and irreversible harm.

President Muizzu underlined the need for unified efforts across families, schools and institutions to build a generation that is both physically and mentally healthy. He framed the issue as one requiring coordinated action rather than the responsibility of any single group.

Government commitments to healthcare and education

Reaffirming the administration’s policy priorities, the President said the Government is consistently working to ensure children have access to quality healthcare and education. He added that the aim is for every Maldivian child to have the opportunity to grow up within the school system.

Marking the occasion, the President also shared a post on his X account, extending warm wishes to the children of the Maldives and their families.

First Lady’s message

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed conveyed her own greetings on X, expressing confidence in the country’s future. She said that as long as children are nurtured and guided with care, the future of the nation remains bright.
