Freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly within the principles of Islam and the law – Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed

Freedom of expression in the Maldives is guaranteed under the Constitution, but must be exercised responsibly within the principles of Islam and the law, Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said.

He noted that journalists in the Maldives enjoy significant freedom, and stressed that this right should be protected and further strengthened to ensure the country continues to uphold high standards of press freedom. He described journalism as a vital national value that plays an important role in addressing injustice, promoting fairness, and ensuring accountability in society.

At the same time, the Minister cautioned against the misuse of media platforms for defamation, personal attacks, or spreading false information. He emphasised that such actions not only harm individuals’ dignity and reputation, but also undermine social harmony and violate both legal and Islamic principles.

Highlighting the government’s commitment, he said the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu places strong importance on transparency and media engagement. He pointed to the President’s regular meetings with journalists and encouragement for ministers to remain accessible, describing open communication as a key priority.

The Minister concluded by calling for responsible, ethical journalism that focuses on constructive criticism and objective reporting, while respecting individual dignity and contributing positively to national development.
