PNC Records Highest-Ever Turnout in Primary Ahead of Local Council Elections

The People’s National Congress (PNC) has concluded its primary for the upcoming Local Council Elections, reporting what it describes as the highest voter turnout recorded in an internal party election in the Maldives.

According to the party, more than 11,300 members cast their ballots on Saturday, surpassing 50 per cent of the 21,000 eligible voters in constituencies where primaries were required. Voting took place simultaneously at 45 designated locations across the country between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., with the PNC stating that polling proceeded safely and without major disruptions.

Although ballot boxes were not placed in every atoll, the party noted that the strong turnout reflected growing enthusiasm among members ahead of next year’s local council polls.

The PNC said results will be announced once all verification procedures are completed. The voter registry used for the primary was based on official data from the Elections Commission, which the party says eliminates the possibility of manipulation. A preliminary voters’ list was published on the party’s website before polling, allowing members to submit complaints before finalisation.

According to the party, each polling location was overseen by two appointed officials, selected through consultations with island and city steering committees, to ensure consistent supervision nationwide.

Party representatives described the primary as well-organised with strong public confidence, adding that the turnout demonstrated solid internal support and preparedness ahead of the Local Council Elections.
