Muizzu pledges housing relief for Malé as land reclamation accelerates

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving the Maldives’ housing crisis, assuring residents that his pledge to provide homes for Malé will be fulfilled during his current term.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with Machangolhi residents at Aminiya School, Muizzu acknowledged concerns over the shortage of affordable housing and outlined progress on major projects across the Greater Malé Region. He promised to expedite construction timelines and address delays in land allocation and flat handovers.

Residents raised a wide range of issues, including road development, beach maintenance, services for senior citizens and people with disabilities, expatriate worker concerns, and the lack of sports facilities. They also called for improvements in governance.

Muizzu criticised Malé City Council for failing to deliver essential services, warning that the government would intervene if neglect continues. He confirmed that overdue public payments are being cleared and pledged timely disbursements once the backlog is resolved.

On transport, Muizzu reassured taxi drivers that the Malé Taxi Line initiative would not undermine traditional services, highlighting new opportunities under the scheme. He also announced plans for an e-gaming centre at Sultan Park’s Winter Park site, an arcade, and a dedicated children’s play area in Buruzu Magu.

Environmental concerns were addressed with a pledge to balance quality of life improvements with sustainability. Large trees may be removed where necessary, Muizzu said, but additional planting will maintain greenery. Residents were invited to share ideas for repurposing the former Arabiyya School building.

“Our administration values constructive suggestions from individuals and organisations. We will continue to listen and act to resolve national issues,” Muizzu said, concluding the meeting.

In a separate update, Muizzu announced significant progress in land reclamation efforts, confirming on his official X account that the dredger TSHD Prins Der Nederlanden arrived today and will begin operations in Hulhumalé Phase III tomorrow. The vessel will operate alongside TSHD Oranji, which is already mobilised in the area. Bund wall works in Giraavaru Falhu will commence once the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and other formalities are completed.

Reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase III is expected to finish by the end of next month, after which both dredgers will move to Giraavaru Falhu, where land reclamation is anticipated to conclude within two to three months. Muizzu has previously stated that reclamation works across the Malé region – a key initiative aimed at addressing housing challenges – are progressing swiftly, with further acceleration expected in December as additional dredgers are deployed.
