Maldives and Saudi Arabia Sign Judicial Cooperation Agreement

The Supreme Court of the Maldives has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of Saudi Arabia, marking a significant step in strengthening judicial collaboration between the two countries.

The agreement was formalised on the sidelines of the International Judicial Conference in Riyadh, with Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed signing on behalf of the Maldives and Saudi Minister of Justice Dr Walid Al-Samani representing the Kingdom. According to the Supreme Court, this is the first cooperation agreement of its kind that the Maldivian judiciary has signed with an Arab Islamic nation at this level.

The five-year framework sets out plans to expand legal, administrative and professional cooperation across both judicial systems. It includes efforts to improve court procedures, strengthen institutional capacity and enhance the skills of judges and judicial staff.

The MoU also enables the exchange of expertise and best practice across key areas of judicial development, and paves the way for joint conferences, seminars, training programmes and technical workshops. Continued exchange visits between judicial experts are expected to support shared learning and promote modern judicial practices.

Officials say the agreement underscores a growing partnership between the two countries and reflects the Maldives’ aim to deepen international cooperation in the justice sector.
