Maldives Sets Guinness World Record for Largest Group Snorkelling Event

Baani Event unites 623 participants across 13 islands in a celebration of ocean heritage and sustainability

The Maldives has set a new Guinness World Record for the most people snorkelling simultaneously, with 623 participants taking part in the Baani Event held on 18 October 2025 in Baa Atoll.

Organised by the Baa Atoll Council in partnership with the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the record-breaking event brought together participants from 13 islands and 15 resorts, including local residents, resort staff, and international visitors. The event highlighted the nation’s enduring bond with the ocean and its deep commitment to sustainable marine tourism.

The snorkelling took place at Villingilifaru Finolhu, a pristine sandbank located just ten minutes from Eydhafushi. Its western lagoon and coral-filled outer reef, home to diverse marine life and flocks of Black-naped Terns, offered a breathtaking natural backdrop for this milestone occasion.

The record attempt began at 16:30 hrs and continued for an hour, as hundreds entered the crystal-clear waters at designated points across the sandbank. A Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed the achievement and presented the official plaque to the Baa Atoll Council during a lively ceremony that featured music, entertainment, and a dazzling fireworks display.

The record was also added to the Visit Maldives Book of Records, with a commemorative plaque and coin presented by Ibrahim Shiury, CEO and Managing Director of VMC, to the Baa Atoll Council in recognition of this landmark achievement.

“This achievement is a proud moment for our nation. It reflects our people’s bond with the ocean and our collective commitment to preserving it for generations to come,” said Ibrahim Shiury, CEO and MD of Visit Maldives Corporation.

The Baani Event stands as a symbol of unity and environmental stewardship, aligning with Visit Maldives Corporation’s vision to position the Maldives as a global leader in marine tourism and sustainability. It demonstrates how community participation, environmental awareness, and visitor engagement can work together to protect the Maldives’ marine heritage while celebrating its role as the world’s leading island destination.
