President starts his trip with Noomaraa and Kan’ditheemu and will be meeting island communities across Shaviyani Atoll to discuss key development priorities

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has begun a four-day visit to the inhabited islands of North Miladhunmadulu Atoll, starting with Noomaraa and Kan’ditheemu, as part of his nationwide initiative to engage directly with local councils and communities across the Maldives.

During the trip, the President will meet Island Councils and Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) to discuss development needs, community welfare, and government priorities. His itinerary includes visits to fourteen islands: Kan’ditheemu, Noomaraa, Goidhoo, Feevah, Bileiyfahi, Foakaidhoo, Milandhoo, Narudhoo, Maroshi, Lhaimagu, Funadhoo, Komandoo and Maalhendhoo. He is accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials from key government institutions and State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

Healthcare and Infrastructure in Noomaraa

In Noomaraa, the President met the Island Council, WDC and heads of local institutions to discuss priority projects. Requests included coastline protection, a beach and boat docking area, road upgrades, adjustments to the RTL ferry route, a library and a multipurpose school hall, and improved laboratory facilities for the health centre.

President Muizzu assured participants that the government would address these needs and reiterated that, by 2026, every inhabited island would be equipped to conduct medical tests in full compliance with Ministry of Health standards. He confirmed that Noomaraa will receive a new laboratory facility as part of this initiative.

The President also announced that the harbour development project will include a docking and swimming area, while water and sewerage projects will continue as planned. The 2026 National Budget will fund a modern football ground, volleyball court and multipurpose school hall.

He further stated that the relocation of Noomaraa’s powerhouse will be completed before next Ramadan, with government support extended to Fenaka Corporation, and pledged to resolve issues relating to RTL ferry routes within the atoll.

During his visit, he observed the commencement of several key infrastructure projects on the island, including the construction of the Noomaraa Fitness and Recreation Centre, a new police station, a mosque, and the new building of the Noomaraa Council Secretariat.

Development and Expansion in Kan’ditheemu

In Kan’ditheemu, the President met with the Island Council, WDC, and institutional representatives to discuss local priorities, including road and harbour development, ongoing work at the health centre and school hall, and the need for additional medical staff.

He announced that Kan’ditheemu Health Centre will be expanded into a two-storey facility with a 20-bed capacity and a wider range of services, transforming it into a regional healthcare hub.

Fulfilling earlier pledges, the President laid the foundation stone for the new Bank of Maldives Kan’ditheemu Branch, due for completion by March 2026. Agreements were also signed for a comprehensive road development project and a coastal protection initiative. Construction has begun on a Fitness and Recreation Centre and a new police station.

The President confirmed that work is underway to extend water, sewerage and electricity services to newly reclaimed areas in Kan’ditheemu and other islands. Upgrading the island’s football pitch to modern standards will also be included in next year’s budget.
