Government Will Not Relocate Islanders Without Majority Support, Says President Muizzu

The President of the Maldives, Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has pledged that any future population consolidation efforts will only proceed with the full backing of affected communities.

During a consultative meeting with residents and local leaders on the island of Raiymandhoo, President Muizzu addressed concerns over potential relocation and the island’s development prospects. The meeting, held at Raiymandhoo School, saw residents express a range of views — with some supporting the idea of relocation and others firmly opposed.

President Muizzu acknowledged the differing opinions and reiterated that the government’s consolidation policy, aimed at improving service delivery and infrastructure, would not be implemented without broad public support. He stated that relocation would only be considered if at least 80% of an island’s population agreed to the move.

“Population consolidation is a cost-effective strategy that can strengthen communities,” he said, “but it must be done with the full consent of the people and after careful consideration of all relevant factors.”

He further assured residents that, should Raiymandhoo opt for relocation, the government would initiate a housing project on the host island to ensure adequate accommodation for all those affected.

The President’s remarks come amid ongoing national discussions about sustainable development and equitable access to public services across the Maldives’ dispersed island communities.
