The Maldives has marked a significant diplomatic milestone, celebrating 60 years since joining the United Nations. The island nation became a member of the UN on 21 September 1965, and has since played an active role in promoting multilateralism, peace, and the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Over the past six decades, the Maldives has emerged as a vocal advocate on global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, human rights, and the protection of vulnerable states. The country’s engagement with the UN has been bolstered by technical assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and support in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Among its notable contributions, the Maldives has served multiple terms on the Human Rights Council and held the Presidency of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly. It has also spearheaded key initiatives, including the establishment of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy and the creation of a Voluntary Technical Assistance Trust Fund to support the participation of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and SIDS in UN Human Rights Council activities. The Maldives has further championed the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
In a statement marking the occasion, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reflected on the Maldives’ entry into the UN as a moment of hope and ambition. He described the anniversary as a testament to the enduring partnership between the Maldives and the United Nations.
“The UN has not only been a partner but a guiding light in our development journey,” said President Muizzu. “From healthcare and education to governance and human rights, the organisation has played a vital role in shaping our progress.”
The President highlighted the Maldives’ leadership in climate advocacy, noting its efforts to amplify the voices of small island nations and urge global action to protect the planet. He also called for reform within the UN, stressing the need for the organisation to adapt to emerging global challenges and maintain credibility through decisive action—citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a pressing concern.
Concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and sustainable world, and pledged continued engagement with the United Nations.
