Finolhu, part of the Seaside Collection, has successfully concluded a four-day coral transplantation initiative, reinforcing its commitment to marine conservation and sustainable tourism. Led by the resort’s resident marine biologist, Ivanna Tobar, the project saw around 1,200 coral colonies relocated from Finolhu’s nurseries to its house reef—one of the Maldives’ most ecologically significant marine habitats.
The event was marked by a spirit of regional collaboration, with marine biologists from neighbouring resorts—Joali Being, Westin, Coco Palm, and Dusit Thani—joining the effort. Experts including Philippa Darby-shire Jenkins (Joali Being), Rosalie Bailie (Coco Palm), Harry Longin (Westin), and Louna Marchand (Dusit Thani) participated in hands-on reef restoration dives, equipment preparation, and reef health assessments, which included the removal of invasive pincushion sea stars.
“This initiative goes beyond coral restoration,” said Steven Phillips, General Manager of Finolhu. “It’s a chance to unite resorts, share knowledge, and champion marine conservation at the highest level. Healthy reefs are vital not only for the Maldives’ biodiversity but also for local communities and the future of sustainable luxury tourism. Together, we’ve made a meaningful impact in preserving these underwater landscapes for future generations.”
Coral conservation is particularly critical in the Maldives, where reefs act as natural barriers against coastal erosion, support fisheries, and underpin the country’s tourism industry. With rising sea temperatures, pollution, and human activity placing increasing pressure on these fragile ecosystems, restoration efforts are essential to safeguarding the nation’s natural heritage.
The programme was designed to balance practical restoration with knowledge exchange. Daily morning briefings prepared teams for underwater activities, while afternoon sessions focused on reef health evaluations and equipment readiness. This structured approach not only accelerated coral transplantation but also strengthened regional expertise in reef management.
Finolhu’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond this event. The resort actively monitors reef health, maintains a coral nursery, and promotes sustainable marine practices. Guests are also invited to participate in conservation-focused experiences, including the Coral Conservation Package, which combines educational activities with opportunities to support ongoing restoration efforts.
