President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu passionately urged the international community and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to come together in a united front to support justice, dignity, and peace for the Palestinian people during his powerful address at the SCO Plus Meeting in Tianjin, China.
In his statement, President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to Palestine, calling for collective action to bring an end to decades of occupation and to uphold the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination. He eloquently emphasized that the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state must be grounded in pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its rightful capital.
Drawing from the Maldives’ own rich history, the President reflected on the country’s recent celebration of 60 years of independence and membership in the United Nations, reiterating its unwavering dedication to peace, dialogue, and diplomacy. He expressed profound concern over the suffering endured by the Palestinian people and vehemently denounced Israel’s ongoing actions as blatant violations of international law and grave assaults on human rights.
The Maldives has consistently championed the Palestinian cause on global platforms. On August 15, a surge of solidarity swept through Malé as thousands gathered at Maafannu Stadium for a nationwide rally organized by the International Aid Campaign, uniting voices in a powerful call to end the blockade of Gaza.
Furthermore, President Dr. Muizzu condemned Israel’s recently unveiled “Vision of Greater Israel” plan, cautioning that it threatens to exacerbate tensions and deepen the humanitarian crisis. He warmly welcomed the adoption of the New York Declaration on Palestine, which has garnered the endorsement of over 130 countries, viewing it as an inspiring testament to international solidarity and unwavering support for a two-state solution.
Since the escalation of Israel’s military campaign on October 7, 2023, a staggering toll has been exacted, with over 60,000 Palestinians, including countless women and children, tragically losing their lives. Aid agencies continue to issue urgent warnings of an escalating humanitarian catastrophe, calling for immediate action and compassion from the global community.
