Qasim calls for legal action against the spread of misinformation

Qasim Ibrahim, Member of Parliament for Maamigili constituency, has urged legal action against individuals responsible for spreading misinformation with the intent of creating discord among citizens for political purposes.

His remarks follow the publication of an article in an online Maldivian newspaper on March 5.

In a social media post, Qasim categorically denied the article’s claim of a “secret plot” at Royal Island Resort involving Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, the Chief Justice of the Maldives, and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, against Supreme Court judges, stating that it is entirely baseless.

Qasim clarified that, despite the report suggesting otherwise, he has not visited Royal Island Resort in the past three years. He called upon relevant authorities to take action against the deliberate dissemination of falsehoods by certain groups through online newspapers, with the apparent aim of creating division among citizens.

“These fabricated reports attempt to falsely implicate me, former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Shihab, his family member and current Chief Justice Uz Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, and current Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim,” Qasim added.

He stressed that while freedom of the press and expression must be upheld, it should not serve as a pretext for spreading misinformation for political gain or undermining societal integrity. He further asserted that such practices would persist unless legal measures are taken against those who repeatedly engage in such conduct.
