President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu delivered his address during the General Debate at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), urging global unity to solve major crises. He highlighted that many of these issues are man-made and called for nations to unite in harmony not a United Nations in misery.
President Dr Muizzu stressed that the United Nations must have a real impact on people’s lives and called on the organisation to enforce its decisions at both global and local levels. He emphasised the need for a multilateral system that supports smaller nations like the Maldives, stating, “We need a system that champions us and delivers for us.”
He also voiced concerns about the UN’s failure to effectively address critical issues such as climate change, conflict, and inequality. “The Maldives cannot—and will not—stand idle while the multilateral system fails. Our survival depends on the well-being of the world,” President Dr Muizzu declared.Speaking at UNGA79 the President called for comprehensive reforms to strengthen the United Nations, insisting that its relevance depends on its ability to make real, positive changes. His address was a clear call to action, urging leaders to ensure that the UN becomes a stronger force for peace, security, and sustainable development.
